I just registered and haven't started looking yet, but I will spend some time looking around.

I would like to hear from any apartment dwellers if we have any here.

I live in Ukraine (I'm an Ohio Born boy though) and my Hot Redhead and I live in an apartment in the city with no backyard or outdoor area to work with.  So I'm wondering if anyone has some suggestions for maybe doing some stove top smoking.  I've seen electric grills at the Bazaar so that could be an option too.

Anyway, glad I found this place and I look forward to learning a few tricks to get meat the way it should be.

Welcome to SMF. Check out the 5 day e course.

As for smoking at the apartment do you have a patio that you can cook on? If you do then you will need to check to see if the apartment complex allows it.

Good luck.

First welocme to SMF. I'm with BMUDD, do you have a balcony or a spot where you currently grill? If not there are small cast iron type of smokers out there you put on your stove top

Thanks for the great welcome guys, really appreciate it.

And yes, I am a long way from home.  I'm in Maine atm and will be heading for home Sunday.

We live on the 6th floor and do have a balcony, but its enclosed and I've been informed that I will not have a grill there.  And I'm not about to lock horns with the Missus on that.  So I'll be limited to using any method that does actually need a grill or much fire.  I can likely get away with an electric grill though and I'm sure I can cobble something together to make a decent smoker.  I just need to source some good wood.  Anyone ever try grape vines?

While visiting the folks here in Maine we bought that grill in my avatar and I used some soaked oak chips to add a bit of flavor to some chops one time and some killer kabobs on Memorial Day.  I'm looking forward to getting into some cold smoking too.  You see, they don't have American style bacon at home (Ukraine).  They do have pork belly though and brisket and shoulder and ribs....

After watching all the smoking shows on Food network, I'm really wanting to get into it.

SO, e-course sign up, check

Hi Yankee, Glad you joined us.

There is lots of info here and very helpful members.

I like Joe's idea about the MES

Good Luck and Happy Smoking

Well, it took some searching (Food Network had nothing come up when I searched there), but I finally found a uTube link to Alton Brown's Flower Pot Smoker.  I watched that episode a couple years ago and have always wanted to try it out.  This looks like just the ticket for an apartment bound smoker nut.  I'll be working on putting something similar together when I get home and with a little luck there just might be some smoked brisket or pulled pork for the 4th.  And I'll have real bacon whenever I want.

Oh, and the MES sounds great, but it MIGHT be tough to find one in Ukraine.

Welcome to SMF, Glad to have you with us.

This is the place to learn, lots of good info and helpful friendly Members.

Many of our members have years of experience in smoking meat.  They are more than happy helping Newbies learn the art.

We have members who cure there own Bacon, Hams, Jerky, Snack Sticks, Make Their own Sausage, etc. if you want to learn,
this is the place.

Don't be afraid to ask questions of them and follow their advice. You won't be sorry, you will be making great Q in no time at all...

Just remember, when curing your own meats follow the instructions included with the cure to the letter, this is not something to experiment with.

Never use more cure no mater if it is Tender Quick or Cure #1 or Cure #2 than the manufacturer says to use, this can be very dangerous.

Tender Quick and Cure#1 or Cure #2 are not interchangeable, neither Cure #1 interchangeable with Cure #2 or vise versa

Hey thanks Beer!

That's some list of things to work on there.  lol

I'll have to work on my own cures and brines though.  I'm on the road tomorrow and don't have any more room in the bags for Qgear.  When I get home in Crimea, I'll start scrounging the parts and get my pit up and running asap.

Love that TBS vid!  The missus (and neighbors) will have no complaints about that.
