Hi all

Just joined and am in the process of purchasing a WSM.  Whilst I'm here I have a question.  I have seen a WSM on Ebay.  Looks in good condition but the inside of the barrels seems completely covered in rust (non gunk).  Is this 'fixable' or should I steer clear?  Sorry if this is a dumb question - can't find any reference on any forums to this.  Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter, Welcome to our "Family" and "Addiction"

Plenty of good folk on here, ask any questions you can think of, and you will get your answers.

The dust should not be a problem, as long it's not heavy pitted rust. Rub it down and use high temp paint or you can spray with one of the spray cooking oils.

Please take time to look at the UK Smokers Forum,

And introduce your self on the UK Roll Call

We have had our 2nd UK Smokes weekend, where members attend and cooked over the weekend, dates and plans are already in place for 2016. Please use the link below to view the website.

Hi Peter and welcome to the forum. Great to have you on board. There are a growing number of us this side of the pond and Steve has pointed you towards the UK specific area of the forum. The UK group is fully integrated into the whole forum and is seen by all members and many of our US colleagues are active contributors. We do, however try to tackle some of the challenges that are more specific to the UK and Ireland.

I am from Kent and so probably not too far from you.

Looking at the photo that "rust" is nothing top worry about. All you will need to do is wipe the inside down with a cloth soaked in cooking oil and that will all go. It just looks as if it has been standing for a while. As the WSMs are porcelain-enamel coated you shouldn't need to touch it up with paint unless there has been physical damage - which there does not appear to be.

What are they asking for it? If it is inexpensive then snap it up as they go fast. I also see that there is a ProQ 22" for sale for £150. This looks in good condition too and would be worth considering

Thank Wade.  Nice to hear from you _ I appreciate the quick feedback.  It's on auction right now £ 102 but 3 days to go.  Not sure what is reasonable to bid up to but I'll keep an eye,  Thanks also for the link to the other smoker - itdoes indeed look good but is collection only in Harrogate, so a bit far.  Cheers Peter
