howdy y'all, my first post on here and want to thank you all for the great info. staying on the topic of the post how far should the rf plate extend. According to the calculators on here thats 0.004X volume, but also the area under the plate should be 0.004x volume, which means that this space will be divided in two equal parts, part for the plate and the the other equal part will be left empty. is this correct? wouldnt that make the rf plate too short?

Say a CC has a volume of 30,000 cubic inches.... then the FB/CC opening would need to be 30,000 x 0.004 = 120 square inches...
The area under the RF plate would be 120 square inches and the area at the end of the RF plate would be 120 square inches...
Following those guidelines provides for pretty much unrestricted air flow through the smoke and better fuel consumption and even temperatures across the cooking surface...
HOWEVER, the calculations come to a point of no return when the CC becomes long and narrow... as the numbers exceed 50% of the diameter of the CC....

Howdy dave, Following your eg, If area under rf plate is 120 sqin and empty space area is 120 sqin , that means the rf plate will run half the length where it is sitting, leaving the other half empty. Wouldn't that be way too short?
The smoker i am buildin is 60" lenght and 30" diameter, so nothing big that would throw the calculations off.
Appreciate you takin the time to answer.

The smoker i am buildin is 60" lenght and 30" diameter

If the area at the end of the RF plate is 120 square inches........... Then the RF plate would stop 4" from the end of the CC....

4" X 30" = 120 square inches....

Either I'm on the wrong page or you are.... Am I misunderstanding something here.... Dave

Oh, by the way, we have . :ahijack:.. junkey's thread... PM me and we will continue this discussion....
