I've been trying to find an inexpensive way to add a SFB to my GOSM so I can use an AMNPS. I found a metal toolbox I could add easily but am wondering if it would be big enough. It is 16"X7"X7.5". Do you think this would be big enough for an AMNPS? The CharGriller SFB is $60 and I can get this toolbox for $14. It has a hinged lid and metal handle so I could make it so it could be detachable. I would just have to cut a hole in each end and add a baffle to one hole and add a rack to elevate the AMNPS a little. Does this sound feasible?

Sure, it's feasible but there are a couple of things that pop to mind.

1. Do you have a BIG BOX GOSM?  The one in the picture below measures 24 x 36" in size.   I tried this trick with a Master Forge 2 door which of course is much smaller, and could not get it to work plus the metal of the Master Forge was much lighter than the BBGOSM and really required a support system that turned the Master Forge's portability to not very useful.

2.  Insure the tool box is NOT galvinized (can't imagine it is but you have to be sure).

3.  Weight of tool box hanging on the side of GOSM.  GOSM metal isn't very thick and could easily be distorted.  Think how you're going to support the box.

4.  When I hung the SFB on the side, I fought smoke leaks around the join area until I added A LOT of high temp sealant and added some larger bolts with fender washers to give a bigger holding area for the bolts.

In the above vue, you see the SFB attached.  Under the SFB is the support which has been integrated to the shelf system I used to get the GOSM up to an elevation that I can work with (bad back problems).

One thing to make sure you do is when you remove the vent shutter from the GOSM, be sure to save the material (in case you want to return the GOSM to factory condition)  or perhaps utilize it in the adaptation of the toolbox.

Perhaps a picture of the toolbox would help us give you more information.

Do you have an AMNPS yet?  The footprint is 5 3/8" x 8" x 2".

Height adjustment?  Instead of a rack, put a brick in.  As long as the AMNPS isn't flaming, you won't generate enough heat to bother the brick.

Don't give up making it work.  It took me several attempts before I got to where I am now.  You too can own a FrankenGOSM.

Thanks Dave!

This is still early in the planning stage. My GOSM is a widebody 3405BGW.

Toolbox:

It says it has a "baked epoxy finish", I would burn some wood in it first to see how it held up to the heat, I could always burn it out real good and repaint the outside with high temp grill paint, but no it's not galvanised.

I thought about making some brackets or a shelf off the bottom of the smoker to support it and use a piece of duct as a pass through between them for the smoke and it would probably lessen the leakage.

My main concern right now is making sure I get a box big enough for enough airflow for the AMNPS to work.

The fabrication is not a problem just might be a little trial and error.

Here's a pic of the toolbox, it looks pretty sturdy:

Bumping this because I see Eric is online and hope he can give some input. I emailed Todd and he thought the dimensions would work and gave me some tips on placement of the AMNPS in the box that really made sense.

Hope you don't mind me following this post. I tend to be a little bull-dogish about getting somethin to work and really want to be able to hot smoke in my gosm with amnps.

What is the weight of the tool box? Also it will be interesting to see how many holes will have to be drilled in the end for air flow.

I hope the box will close tight enough to keep smoke from escaping through the lid.

Hey Franko, I don't mind at all, I'm glad you're interested and I welcome any tips or input anyone wants to give.

Well I found a toolbox at my Dads yesterday that is real close to the one in the pic above but it has a flat top and is just a little bigger so I think it will work good. I'm not sure of the weight but I don't think that will be a factor. I am planning on adding some brackets to the bottom of the smoker to set it on and want to put it parallel to the smoker. I'm going to cut a hole out the back and attach a piece of duct between it and the smoker, then cut a hole in the side and install a damper to control airflow. So that's the plan so far, I want to burn out the box real good before I get started so I'm not really sure when I'm going to have time to get going but I will keep everyone posted as I make progress.

I threw together a "prototype" tonight, it needs some refinement but it seems to work. I don't have an AMNPS yet so I used some charcoal and chips in a chipbox. I just wanted to see if it would flow smoke into the smoker.. It flowed really good, I have some leaks but I can fix that with rope gasket, I want to make it removable. I will burn out the box really well before I ever put any food in the smoker. I'm going to add a damper on the intake to control airflow and also change the mounting brackets, I have some drawer slides I want to use so they will close out of the way when the box is not installed. I think I'm going to make the duct between the box and smoker bigger, I want to redo it anyway, this was just one I bent real quick out of a "no hunting" sign I got for a dollar (was trying to keep costs down until I knew it would work). If anyone has any ideas to make it better Please voice them while I am still in the prototype stage. Here's some pics, it was starting to get dark so I had to use the flash:

It's not pretty but some high temp black paint will help

Remember this is in the developmental stage, i plan on making it work better and look a lot better, I just threw this together to see if it would work.

I will appreciate all input that can make it better.

S2K9K - Looks like you are on to something. I sure hope this works out. I am sick and tired of putting up with the white smoke generated by the gosm. I managed to over-smoke 2 cornish hens on it yesterday. Bitter. Yuck. You are going to love the TBS generated by the AMNPS.

I hope Chefrob is following. He said he is having the same problems.

Franko, how much wood do you put in at a time? I have no problem getting TBS but I only use 2 small chunks at a time. When i first started using my smoker i used a lot of wood and got too much smoke so I cut back.  My problem now is just a couple of chunks doesn't last very long and I have to keep adding more at least once an hour. That is why I want to incorporate the AMNPS so it will burn for hours and I won't have to open the door. Shorter smokes like chicken isn't a problem but butts and briskets is a pain.

S2K9K  -  I have been using chips (moistened) which I get at adademy.sporting goods, but I had run out and decided to try using some pellets I had purchased for the amnps. ROOKIE MOVE.I found out the hard way, they don't work so well in a gosm chip pan.

Thanks for the info about using chunks. I will give these a try. If they work well enough I may give up on the gosm mods and just use the amnsp for cold smoking. If I stay around this forum long enough, maybe I will learn something about cooking (provided I'm not too old and set in my ways already).

interesting.....i thought about a tool box but all HD had were plastic.

I got lucky and found this one in my Dad's garage and he didn't want it. The one I referenced above is at Amazon for under $15, I was going to get that one before I found the freebie.
