I just ordered the big block off of amazon a few days ago. What I want to know is, how hot does the outside of the smoker get? My plan is to construct an outdoor kitchen. I haven't finalized the idea yet but I plan to take either unfinished kitchen cabinets and treat them or simply buy treated lumber and build the cabinets. Either way, I want to enclose my grill and GOSM Big block in it. Maybe this isn't possible but I'm thinking if I use some fireproof insulation material around the smoker and build a stack to route the smoke over the countertop it should work. I'm just worried that the sides will get too hot for even that precaution. any thoughts would be great. I can't wait to get this bad boy going.

It will burn you if you touch it. You may want to line the surrounding area with the fire proof stuff well. I have burnt my arm on the door of mine a time or two when the wind blew it shut on me.

Being that the GOSM's aren't insulated they get very warm on the outside and while I'm sure it could be done you will need to make sure what its against isn't going to catch on fire. Good luck figuring it out and be sure to post some pics when you do it

I'd love to see your design. Also, there are double walled versions of the GOSM sold by Vermont Castings (double the walls, double the price). But I'd think any kind of fireproof 'stuffing' should work.

Good advice so far. Something else to consider is the GOSM tends to run a little on the hot side without mods and by inclosing it you may run the risk of higher temps.

Thanks for the feedback! I have some more thinking to do on this. I actually thought adding the insulation and building it in would help I didn't realize they run that hot. That being the case I might just extend the counter over it and add a stack to route the smoke.

Worst part is amazon is backordered so I need to wait 3 - 6 weeks for it. I'd go somewhere else but I got it at $189 and no where that's not related to amazon had it at that price.

I'll definately be back with pics though!

I hope you get it but I don't want to be the bearer of bad news. The manufacture of the GOSM is going under if not already under.

Yeah, you might want to check out BassPro online. I had one ordered from epod2000 and they're not getting any more. I then had the same back-order deal from Amazon but I doubt they'll be getting anymore either. The price sure is right, though.

Well, not sure how much I trust them but I called Amazon, they said I wouldn't have been able to order it if they didn't have it in stock, I misspoke before, it wasn't back ordered, it was just going to take 3-6 weeks to deliver. Not sure why if they have them in stock.

I checked out Bass Pro, I just don't want to pay that much. If I'm going that much I might look into a bradley.

There is a fire rated blanket that is used to line exhaust tubes from commercial ovens and whatnot that get very hot. And the blanket protects anything around it that may be able to catch fire. Not sure the cost but it would work perfect.

Very nice! I'll look into it.

Now, for another question. After talking with Amazon for a second time it's not sounding too promising for the big block. So, question for ya's. The main reason I wanted the big block was to have enough room to do multiple racks of ribs without having to cut them or bend them. Does the smaller models have enough room to do this? If so I may just save even more money and go for the smaller one. Also, I found that my local Gander mountain has the smokey hollow's which I've heard are the same as the GSOM's. Anybody got any input on this? My other option is a masterbuilt electric from the wally.

My 3405BGW is too narrow for full racks. I have seen the Smoke Vault at Gander thats about 24" wide and I was impressed and am still thinking I may buy one a bit more money but sure looks nice

Well, the GOSM is no longer an option. Unfortunately amazon is sold out and has no guarentee's when/if they'll get more. Sucks, had I acted a little sooner I could have got a heck of a deal.

But, there is a silver lining, after much deliberation I got the 24" smoke vault from Gander Mountain. Let me tell you, this thing is HUGE! I mean I obviously saw it in the store but after getting it home and putting it together it stands almost a full 4' high and is very solid. I can't wait to try it out.

The only problem is I think the thermometer was broken, it's basically in two pieces held together by a wire. I think I'll just pick up a universal one at Home Depot tomorrow if I can. If not I need to call the manufacturer and have them send me one. Other than that though this is pretty well built, nice big cast iron tray for chips, and TONS of space. As long as the weather holds I'll be smoking some ribs tomorrow.
