one of the things i got for fathers day was a gosm,(not the big block) that my dad had picked up at the local dirt cheap. thing is it has no racks or chip pan,or water pan. just the burner, regulator and and the smoker with controls. i know between extra stuff i have laying around, and can get i'll have a pretty good lil smoker here. my question is i've never fooled with one and nobody around here has any to look at, does anyone have some good pics of where the chip pan and water pan are suppose to be? does it use a drip pan? if i can get a look at one it'll help me figure out how to rig this one up. thanks for any help

Daddio this is the best photo of mine that I could find. Below the chicken quarters is the water pan and below that is the wood box. Hope this helps you.

thanks snowball and dingle, hey dingle on yours how big is the water/drip pan ? as far as how much room between the edge of the pan and the walls of the cooker? i know heat has to flow around it. and approx how far? above the burner is the wood pan?

thanks erain i'll have to check that out from my home computer, but i was hoping to find that very thing also thanks a bunch

Daddio,
I went out and took some pictures. We'll see if they are any help. I posted a thread on an "ashtray mod" I did a while back that totally replaced the stock rack and firebox. It worked well. (http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/for...ht=ashtray+mod) I was proud of it but didn't get any feedback. Oh well.
The gap between the rails is 12" for your water pan. The stock pan has 1 1/8" inch lip on it (all the way around) to keep it on the rails.

The rack for the firebox raises the box 2 " off the floor of the smoker. I actually cut my legs some-can't remember how much I took off. I was told by another member that the rack was too high.

I don't know why my pictures don't show without clicking on the link but I hope they help. The stock firebox is too heavy and a 9X13 cake pan works even better. Instead of the rack you could probably support it with bricks under the lip. Many people put bricks in the bottom as an added thermal regulator. You can see where my bricks sit and if laid down they would keep the pan close enough to the burner. By the way consider the needle valve mod. It really helps with minor temp tweaking. I don't have that link copied, just do a search.
The unit is a good one and I've had lots of success with it. Enjoy.

dmack thanks for the pics the fire box is a good looking set up,i may try that,in the first pic you have it resting right on the burner it looks like. but if i understand you right,if ya lay those bricks down and then just rest the lip of the pan on there it works ok? i may see if my old brinkmann gourmet smoker water pan will fit in here. also if i can find some old oven racks i may be able to cut them down to fit for my racks.

Daddio,
If you look at the pictures on the "ashtray mod" you can see that I put bolts in the bottom pan to give a little clearance. I didn't think I should have it directly on the burner. Actually I think that bottom piece tapers up just a bit around the burner, but I still thought there should be a little room for some air movement. I do think laying the bricks down would work fine, just rest the lip of your cake pan on the bricks. The foil kind of complicates my pictures but is a big help keeping things somewhat clean. I would think the biggest headache for you will be the grates. The stock grates are 12X18. Sounds like you are handy. One thing I enjoyed about this unit is the modifications you can make to it. Just kind of makes it more your own. I can't remember the thread, but I think you can do a search on "gosm mods" or "modifications".
