Folks,

The other day I ran an additional probe to check the calibration of the GOSM's thermo. I found it was off by over 30 degrees. I had adjusted it last summer, so I thought I'd try it again. Well this time I broke it. Here is the mod I came up with. I took the guts out of the original thermo and put the medalion back on the door. I was able to stick a digital probe with a clip through the door. Works great!

I did not set out to do this, but wanted to show you all that there is hope if you break the stock thermo on your GOSM.

Take care, have fun, and do good!

Thanks, Meowey! That picture about sums up my feelings about the thermo on my GOSM. Only I was thinkin' 30 caliber!

Cheers!

I haven't looked at that thermometer on my GOSM since I seasoned it and found it off by 25°. I am thinking of removing it altogether, since it has become a place for moisture to drip from during my cold winter smokes. Nasty stain running down the front of my GOSM.

That's interesting.

I've only used my GOSM three times since buying it (that would be every weekend), but each time I used a digital thermometer that I had purchased for use with my Charbroil H20.

I was pretty impressed with how close the thermometer on my GOSM was to the digital. I would guess it's within about 5 degrees, although it does take it a bit longer to settle in than the digital.

Is calibrating the temperature gauge on the GOSM a common routine, how do you go about doing it, and how often do you need to do it?

Here I was all excited about not having to have the wire for the digital hanging out of my unit :P

If yours is working, then i would not mess with it!

Mine was never close. To adjust it you have to remove the whole thermo assembly. I calibrated it by dipping the probe in boiling water to see what the reading was. I loosened the nut on the back of the assembly and turned the post gently with pliers - checked again in the boiling water, etc. - and finally tightened the nut back up. The last time I tried it i guess I was not gentle enough and broke it.

Hope this helps.

Take care, have fun, and do good!

Don't know about replacements. I'm fine with this mod.

Add a couple of thermometers to the side of the unit and you'll never look at that inaccurate door thermomoter again.

Instead you'll know the temps between the top 2 racks and the bottom 2 racks...ya know, the temperature where the the meat actually is!

Good Luck!
