GOSM Burner - Flame QViews

I have read several threads from members who have or are in the process of adding a needle valve between the regulator and control valve of their units.....this is in order to be able to lower the flame during the hot months for better control over the lower temps. Here is a link of the typical valve that can be used.....

I am deciding that I may do the same....after having checked out the flame on my GOSM (16" wide) I noticed the flame from low to high does not have a lot of range and low setting seems higher than I would expect....as you see from the pics there is quite a bit of yellow in the flame , though in accordance with the manual....I normally would consider this type of flame as being oxygen deprived to a certain extent...and normally desire a bluer over-all flame. The 16" GOSM is rated at 13,500 BTU, while the GOSM Deluxe is at 18,000 BTU.....All comments would be welcomed..........Rick

I was just about to post about my GOSM flame when I saw your thread.
Not trying to hijack, but would love to see comments on flame size and color for the GOSM, i have the smaller unit
I am getting a flame that it is mostly blue with some yellow, seems to be higher percent of yellow on lower setting.
I am concerned about soot and fouling my cook from this flame, or is it normal? Never noticed it before for whatever reason.
Any thoughts?

I had the same problem, what I found is on the burner tube, just after the orifice there is an air bleed screen, it was clogged with grease and gunk, took it off, there is one Phillip's head screw holding it, cleaned it, then replaced it and readjusted the flame, no more orange. It's hard to see, you will have to remove the wood box and then you will be able to find it.

Since then I always smoke with a drip pan under the meat and I haven't had a problem since.

I have had a GOSM for about 6-7 years now and I have just recently noticed my flame has gone from a nice 1/2 inch blue flame to about an inch long yellow flame and now my temps are way higher than they use to be. I wonder if I clean out the orvice would this help.... or is there something else I can do?

Yes cleaning the orvice will help on a better flame and less fumes burning off.

What can you use to clean the orvice and what do you need to do when adjusting the screw? I just went outside and looked at my GOSM and I never new about cleaning that part of the smoker.... thanks for the Info! In the Pic above yours is WAY cleaner then what mine is.... mine is caked with all kinds of junk. I will be cleaning it as soon as I can figure out how to do it.

I'm going to check mine also (when the weather warms up). I have trouble keeping mine under 250 and this may be the cause. As always thanks for all of the great info folks, this place rocks!!

I am thinking you might want to look into a needle valve mod. I had the same problem with my stainless smoker and I got a needle valve on it and what a difference. I went from 220* down to 110* on low. A huge difference in the temp.

My GOSM is only on its' second season and I'm sure not used much up until this time as much as yours....I was able to just use a cue tip soaked in alchohol to clean the air screens, they were not that dirty......

Once you have loosened up the screw that you see on your device you can then rorate it from side to side by hand to loosen it up.....once it is loosened, reach under the the gas control knob on the outside of the unit....you should be able to feel where the supply hose connects into the main supply metal tube.....feel farther towards the burner housing and you will be able to feel the other end of the rotating adjustment....you should be able to rotate it left or right for an adjustment...you can now light the burner and make the adjustment with your hand outside of the unit and adjust it for you optimum flame........turn off burner and retighten the screw.....DONE!
These pics are after adjusting my burner for what I felt was its' optimum flame (as much blue flame as I could get)....It did help some...I especially noticed a bluer flame at its' low setting and a much stronger flame at its' highest setting...... Rick

But cleaning them certainly improved your flame, which shows they don't have to be very dirty to affect the flame.

I would like to clarify one thing, this is how we clean the AIR SCREEN, this is not the ORIFICE.

The ORIFICE is located on the opposite end of the Control Knob and is inserted into the Burner Tube, it can cause problems too by becoming clogged or a spider building it's web there or in the Burner Tube itself. The ORIFICE can be inspected by removing the Control Knob assembly.
