    Hello everyone.

I thought that I would check in here with everyone before I start asking questions in other sections of this forum. I am relatively new to smoking. I bought a cheap smoker (True North Electric Food Smoker) 2 years ago after I got a gift certificate for a local store. I figured I would go cheap and see if I liked it before sinking any large amount of money into it. My first attempts at smoking involved smoking salmon and here is the surprise...... I really really liked it. So then I started trying to do ribs. I found that no matter how long I kept the ribs in there I still had to finish them on a grill. Finally I got my thermometer out and checked the internal temp and it wouldn't get over 145 F and that was on some of the hottest days in August. Then the season was over and I couldn't smoke any more[IMG].

Last year I decided that I wanted to try some "big" cooking. So I started to use my BBQ grill as a smoker. I turned out a couple good briskets and a pulled pork and have been hooked ever since. I generally have people over when I cook though and don't want to have my BBQ space taken up while smoking. I have friends that are vegetarians and want to cook other things on the BBQ as well. So I decided that summer 08 would be the time to get a real smoker and start my journey into the wonderful tastes that can come out of a smoker.

Over Christmas I got a very very pleasant surprise. My in-Laws for Christmas have given me 500-600 dollar allowance to put towards a smoker [IMG]. I think that they also want me to smoke more food for them[IMG]. That brings me to how I found SMF. I have been doing research on what type of Smoker to buy. I am currently think that the 24 inch Smoke Vault will do me well but am still researching. Since I live in Canada I am having a tough time actually finding stores that carry smokers so advice/ opinions from here will/ are invaluable for me as I will have to purchase online or go for a road trip.

Anyways that is my story and now I have to get to work. I will be posting soon some questions that will hopefully let me find the perfect smoker for me [IMG].

Welcome Pat to the forum! There are a number of folks here that have the smoke vault and can offer you some advice. Feel free to take Jeff's 5-day course as a starter. It will help even if you've been grilling for years. Be sure to send q views of your cooks...we like em.

Welcome to the forum, glad you decided to join us. Lots of great people here ready and willing to share their knowledge.

I own a Camp Chef Smoke Vault and it is a very good smoker capable of turning out some excellent Q. It has a large capacity, well built and is capable of a wide temperature range. I have successfully turned out some good ribs, pork butts, brisket, turkey, chicken, sausages, cheeses, etc.

Good luck with your choice and welcome to SMF!

Welcome to SMF, Pat! There are lots of people here who will share their experience with you to get you off on the right track.

If you just started looking for smokers at Christmas, they may be pretty sparse at this time of year. At least they are around here. As spring gets closer you may see a bigger selection appear in stores.
