God, Family, America & Smoked meat

  1. Hey Y'all... A few years ago I developed a passion for BBQ. I'm in my mid 30s with a beautiful wife and a wonderful little boy.

I served in combat as an infantryman in the 101st airborne during the initial invasion of Iraq, and now I pastor a church in Troy, Michigan.

I love God, love my family, love my country, and I love low and slow cooking.

My favorite part about BBQ is the process (don't get me wrong, I love the eating)... but there's something special about stoking a long hickory fire while the smell of bbq pork fills the air.

I've only been at this a couple of years, and I have a lot to learn. I am hoping to glean some wisdom from you fine men and women out there who know what you're doing... I've learned a lot already on here.

About three years ago I built my first pit out of cinder block. It's about 4' x 4' wide and 5' tall. I have an open hearth in front. I used old oven racks to build multiple-layered shelves inside. I call her Roberta. I've spent a lot of time with pork, brisket, and ribs. All open fire - All hickory, cherry, apple and mesquite.

Last year my wife bought me a Smoke Hollow 3500 charcoal/propane grill and smoker from Home Depot. I've started to use it for small cooks... She's pretty, but she's no Roberta.

Welcome to SMF Jaredwizner!  Sounds like you've got some great equipment and like always, just can't forget your first love Roberta.  Sounds like she still gets a workout now and again.  Post some pics of her if you don't mind.

Having the gear for those small smokes makes life quick and easy too.

We're glad you're here, a big thank you for your service, and we're looking forward to seeing you around the board!

We're glad to have you here. The search bar at the top is your most valuable resource here. This forum has been around for over ten years, so there is a good chance that any questions you may have, have already been answered (they may have 10 different answers, but you'll get an instant response non the less).
Please be sure to post your smokes along with your process and recipes. We will be glad to help you along the way and we may also learn something new ourselves in the process. Also, don't forget the very important Q view! (We're mad for pics on here 😁)
Always remember to have fun because it's not fun if you have to work at it. Thanks for joining,
    - Ryan
