What is the best way to seal the lid on a smoker ? Is there a gasket that can be used?

I would not put a seal on that grill..... Call the engineers at Rec-Tec and talk to them.... That smoker needs to breathe a little and since there is not an exhaust stack, the "smoke leaking" may be engineered into the smoker design....

In the words of Chad Knaus, crew chief for Jimmy Johnson, " you could screw up a perfectly good race car" or something close to that...

Actually Dave, the Rec Tec does in fact have an exhaust stack on the right side of the barrel.  I know of guys who have put self-adhesive Nomex gasket around the lip of their RT lid.  I haven't done this because I don't think a little leaking smoke affects the performance of the pit.  And as you mentioned, if it ain't broke, don't fix it...if a door gasket was a major issue in the design, I think RT would already be doing it.

1Ray...that being said, if you want to seal it...it has been done.  You might search for something similar to this:

Nomex gasket...just Google nomex or BBQ gaskets.

I just recently put a woven gasket around the lid for my Traeger and its amazing how the temp swings settled down. It will usually stop dead on (or 5 degrees over) in the upswing and 5 (sometimes 10 below on the downside. This in 55 to 75 degree outside temps. When it gets hotter I just dropped the P setting down one and she's very steady on temps again.

I just wanted to seal across the bottom to keep the moister from running down the side of the tank. Thanks to all for the help
