Garlic question

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by beuregard, Aug 18, 2015.

  1. I just started picking my garlic a few days ago. I left some of the garlic plants seed out, while the others I topped. Can anyone tell me if I can replant those seeds this fall? Last fall I planted the bulbs I had purchased. Was wondering what the timeframe would be to plant this years crop from my existing seeds before these may begin to grow individual cloves? Any help is appreciated. Tim

The "seeds" or "bulbils as they are known in the garlic world", will grow but usually take 2 years to form decent heads of garlic.... plant them now... cloves are usually planted in the fall a week or 2 before the first frost....
  3. Thanks Dave for the information, I will clear a spot in the garden and put the seeds in for a 2 year rest. Dave was that your post I read in the Forum on drying garlic slices in your food dehydrator?

I hang fry my garlic for 45-60 days out in the dry shed,  cures them well for long term storage.

I usually wait until the first frost to plant. Haven't planted from seed as I remove the scapes in spring.
