I'm sorry about the wrong info but for some reason I had "BAKING POWDER/SODA" on the brain when I posted this. It was actually "CORN STARCH" that I used. I hope nobody has tried it the way I posted. My wife corrected me about this, imagine that.

See what y'all started about the green tomatoes try'n to ripen them. When I read the thread I got a hankering for some fried green tomatoes. Luckily tomatoe season is in now so i went down to see my friends that own a packing house and got some green tomatoes to fry up.

I just use half flour and half baking powder "CORN STARCH" (for crispness). I call them "Tomatoe Chips".. lol

    here's a few pics, enjoy

They already started to turn color on me, but were still good

Jack...I'm interested in your 1/2 & 1/2...Flour and BAKING SODA.....Is this an old family recipe?...I have heard using Baking Soda/ Powder to help with crispness but that's in the neighborhood of 1 teaspoon per Cup of Flour...Curious...JJ

  7. That is one of my favorite sandwiches. I put a big pile on some good bread and salt them. You make them like I do. I dont care for them breaded the way I usually see in the south.

JJ.. my bad.. it was baking powder not soda.. sorry bout that y'all... I just threw it together one time to try it and they came out pretty crispy, so I've been doing it that way since , JJ.. I probably could cut back some on the baking powder. Somtimes I put some garlic powder, onion powder, a lil of this a lil of that. mostly just experiment.

Al, it's Mater season in Fl right now... just stop by a tomatoe feild and ask them If you can get a few. or go to a "U-pick" and pick green ones and try em.. try them in different stages of doneness to see which way you like em best...

X2 on JJ.  Seems like a lot of soda to me, but those do look great!

I have also used self rising flower in similar applications.

    Good luck and good smoking.

Thats no problem...If you cut the Baking Powder Back to 1-2tsp per Cup of Flour, your 'Maters will be less bitter...You can try 1/2 & 1/2... Flour and Corn STARCH or Rice Flour...Real crispy coating!...JJ

Yup.  When the green maters are just trying to turn ripe and not too green they can be great.

Then again, I like fried eggplant this time of year, too.  Just lock me up in the loonie bin!  LOL

    Good luck and good smoking.

In PA, the Frost determines the end of the Tomato season.

Then you have to pick them all at once, because it's "Use 'em or Lose 'em"!!

These were all from one cherry Mater plant:

WOW.. all from one plant ?

    Yup---one plant.

Those were just the ones that were on the plant when the Frost hit.

That plant was over 17' high, and furnished over 3,500 cherry tomatoes.

That was only what was eaten---We didn't count bad ones that got thrown in the yard & woods.

    It was Crazy!!!!

BTW: The only reason we counted them was because we had bets how many it would be. We ALL underestimated by a lot !!!!
