food allergy

    I figured out today I have a food allergy from shrimp.... My middle finger swelled a little and my hands itched real bad for about 10 minutes after peeling some shrimp... I dawned on me that  I remebered the last time I peeled shrimp a few months ago my hands itched real bad then but I never put 2 and 2 together.... Well at last I can still eat them.. haven't had any affects from that yet.. hope not........ Any one have the same problem....

    No but it is wiered that you can eat them but can`t handle them...Guess you will have to use gloves when handling them...

    Allergies are so strange - as a kid I was allergic to my own hair and hundreds of other things - finally after 100's of shots and growing older I have outgrown most of them. 

    Still can't do rye or horseradish - crazy stuff

    As a kid they said I was so allergic to seafood I would die if I ate any.
    So I have never has fish or seafood.
    One time I got poke in the hand by the fin of a catfish I had a bump on my hand for a year.

    Finally outgrew that allergy - Literally had to shave my head as a kid then grew into crew cuts and longer

    I have seen this type of allergy before. Just pay very close attention to how your body reacts to shellfish or things with iodine. Things can change, usually the wrong way as adults.

    I once new a guy who would not eat fried foods in restaurants.  He claimed that any food fried in the same fryer as seafood would make him deathly ill. Unfortunately some restaurants do not maintain a dedicated fryer for seafood only.

    I wish my allergies were due to my hair.  I would have outgrown them 30 years ago! [​IMG]

    When you get a guest that has allergies it is a serious deal. Unfortunately most places out there do not know how to take care of them, they even get annoyed with the guest when they are trying to inform the operation what their needs are. But on the other hand some guest get a bit out of line with some of their expectations. It is a crazy balance to try and maintain.......

    That reminds me a girlfriend I had was a cashier at a store and at that time bar code scanners were new to the food industry, she wouldnt let her scan the items and made here ring up everthing because she was affraid of getting cancer.....LOL

    Are you saying that if I had spent all those years making cashiers ring up my groceries instead of using scanners I would still have hair?

    Now that is just plain cruel!  [​IMG]

    Well it did it to me again...... I spent my new years in the ER. I bought 2 shrimp rings and ate about half of a ring and within 30 minutes I started to itch then my eyes face and arm pits swelled then my arms were full of raised bumps and had difficulty breathing.....my heart was racing so off to the ER I went...... They took me in right away and hooked up an I V and pumped me with meds and it subsided as fast as it came..... Now I know what happens to people with bee alergies ... Not fun... Well I have to give up shrimp..(damm).. I havent had any reactions to oysters and crab legs but will have to be on the alert next time I eat some.... If I had to give up Oysters, crab legs and fish that would really stink..............

    Dude that sucks! Yea I have seen people develope allergies over time. See if your doctor can test for others, don't need any surprises........

    There are different way of doing the tests depending on what they are looking for. The most common way i have seen is the stick test. They stick you with a pin that has a certain allergy in it. They map them out and see for reactions. Other ways include drawing blood, but I would get with the doctor and follow what they recommend.

  17. Yes allergies are serious!

    My mom is deathly allergic to nuts, (except for her tolerating my Dad), and actually has to carry an EpiPen in her pocketbook.

    I am allergic to a zillion topical things (from wool, to DEET in bug repellant and retinol in women's face creams and cosmetics, and  more - albeit thankfully not with any breathing or anaphylactic reaction), and then also to wheat, digestively, and recently I learned also that I cannot handle eating eggs!

    And so, good for you for being aware of it and recognizing it and so forth.

    I do think that once one avoids their allergy triggers, there is still tons to eat, touch, wear, do, and enjoy! So here's to finding that great balance!

    I am very allergic to shrimp, lobster, crab, scallops, and clams. I first learned of this while working as a cook at a supper club when I was in high school. My fingers got itchy and swelled when I touched it, as well as setting off an asthma attack. I don't eat it or touch it and need to stay out of places that prepare a lot of it, such as Benihana type places that grill and create steam. I'd last about 5 minutes before my asthma would hit me. Anyway, I've lived with it for over 40 years now, so you get use to asking servers to warn you of any sauces containing any of those shell fish. Now you know where my moniker, "Noshrimp", was derived.
