I can't tell what smoker it is, from what I see you can use less coal or put a baffle where the heat enters.
 
Ok i see what u mean about the coal.. I dont wana sound dumb but im new to this.. When u said baffle would a water pan work tight up against. Its a oklahoma joe smoker

That would deflect some heat, you could also make a charcoal basket
