First try at a pork butt, any suggestions?

Well, Here it is!!  I tasted a little piece of it and it is AMAZINGLY great!!  very moist and tender.  I am calling it a success, but final word will have to be when the family sits down to dinner.

 
PERFECT!!! Great job!!! They'll be spoiled, and you'll be busy. Once you start you can't stop as no commercial BBQ will ever taste as good!
 
No stall? Don't know if that happened to me ever in a lot of years of smoking butts. Here's a thought..... I have an mes 40 in my arsenal and the gen 2's are notorious for being way off on their temp gauge. For mine I have to set it at about 215 to get a 250 cook temp. Do you have a maverick or other temp monitor to verify your temps? You may have been cooking higher than you thought. Cause 8 hours for a 8 lb butt is not the norm. But if it came out good that's all that matters. All the best to you.
 
Dude, that looks awesome! 8hrs for an 8 lb. butt is kinda strange. My guess is that it would have hit the stall, but when you foiled, it just powered right through. Perfect!
 
I do have a maverick. My MES40 is a little off as well but the other way. I set it at 260 and it cooks at about 245-250. Seems the longer I cook, the greater the difference in temps. when the cook was over, it was set at 250 and the smoker temp (maverick) was only showing 225. I was shocked at the timeframe too. If I would have known it was gonna take 8 hours, I woulda slept in a little.

Meat was tender and very juicy. Bone came out without any trouble. The parents both said it was the best pulled pork they had ever eaten! I take that as a great compliment.

I really appreciate all the help and comments from you all. Can't wait for next weekend. Think I'm going to try a brisket!
