Hello, my name is Bob. I am from Wisconsin and I will be making my first attempt at smoking a pork shoulder today. My smoker is a charbroil Jr. Smoker. And I will be burning mostly hickory with a little Applewood chips also. Any advice is welcome!

Good afternoon and welcome to the forum, from another hot day here in East Texas, and the best site on the web. Lots of great people with tons of information on just about  everything.

Wow it's been a couple of weeks already. I had pictures of the sholder but have sine deleted them. I wish that I could say that it was a successful first attempt at smokin, but it was not.

Turns out that I should have done more research prior to the first attempt. I can say that thanks to reading up on the forum since, I have realized that my biggest mistake was too much smoke! The shoulder was very black very quickly. Also I did not let the meat get to temp and used a picnic instead of a butt. I hope to try again this weekend!
