Good evening and welcome to the forum, from a rainy day here in East Texas. Lots of great people with tons of information on just about  everything.

Welcome to the site.  Do you have an idea of which fuel you are interested in going with?  I use charcoal and have no problem recommending the Weber WSM smokers.  (Size depends on # of folks you need to feed).  There are pros and cons to all of the fuel types and you will find folks who have experience with all types around the site.

My current favorite for all around use and "Bang for the buck" goes to the Char Griller Akorn.

Here is a good place for you to start some serious study.

Welcome from SC, pnite. Fuel, number of folks you're cooking for, do you like to play with the fire or do you want set and forget? There are lots of variables to selecting the type of cooker that you want. As mentioned above the WSM (charcoal) is a good way to start and is user friendly. However, the offset stick burner (wood) will deliver better overall flavor. Just go on the various sites and you will get more information than you can ever sort through. Notice as you do your due diligence that there very few objective opinions. Everybody thinks that their cooker is the best, I know mine is. Lol

Good luck and good smoking, Joe
