I've been a long time BBQ fan, and very fortunate to live near plenty of excellent BBQ joints in Kansas City, so I'm not sure why it's taken so long to take up getting the smoke on myself.

As a surprise a couple of weeks back on my birthday, my wife and mother enrolled me in a smoking class with a chef who also happened to be an American Royal Grand Champion. Add to that being a huge fan of BBQ Pitmasters on TV, and here I am two weeks later with a kitchen counter strewn with rubs, thermometers, rib racks, and whatnot!

Tonight, my oldest son and I fired up our new smoker to season it and practice regulating temps. It's an Oklahoma Joe that we bought yesterday for $399.00 at Ace Hardware. After looking at lots of smokers along with some used ones on Craigslist, I'm very happy with the quality and size of this one. Temps were very easy to maintain, even with a somewhat cool ambient around 45°.

Here's our new baby, looking forward to learning a lot here!

Nice choice on your smoker, your among meat smoking friends here at SMF. Looking forward to some pics of your Q off the new smoker...

You have gone and done it now! Stumbled into a whole nest of grazed smokers. Next thing you know you will be getting funny looks from your family while you snap pics of the excellent Q you just smoked.
