I'll be doing my first Pork Butt on my WSM.. It's 17lbs.

Would I be better off cutting it in half?

Planned on putting it in at around 11pm and cooking though night and next day.

Sounds like you have a whole pork shoulder, the butt and the picnic. Yes you could separate the two, it will make the cook easier to manage, especially if you insist on cooking "low and slow". You will probably also need a meat saw to cut through the bone to separate the two cuts of meat.

Just saw the package my wife got at cash and carry its two butts in a pack. So the smoker is ready, I plan on starting at about 5am.

Lots of leftovers!  Costco sells those two packs too.  I use them for parties and pot lucks.  If it is just my wife and I we'll smoke them both, keeping one for ourselves and sharing the other with neighbors.

Was an easy cook, the WSM held temp perfect and required just a few adjustments to get ash to fall away. Pics coming soon. Ended up cooking 2 Butts, 2 Birds and a Buffalo Roast. Easy to say I've got alot of leftovers.

Yup and it was outstanding and to note I could not have gotten anything else in there.

I always try to fill the smoker. No point in not maximizing your time and fuel. (And this is why my freezer is full of leftovers)
