Ok so I'm new to smoking but have had fun doing it a little with an electric smoker that my father has. My self had 2 friends got to thinking why not build one of our own, I had a snowmobile trailer and a fuel oil tank sitting out back. We have done some research and still can not decide how we want to desgine it. First we where thinking a hot box on the side like most of them we had seen and making it out a 55 gallon drum, but I'm worried it will not hold up and it will warp fairly bad. So then we threw out the idea of having the hot box just in the bottom of the smoker its self with a water pan above it, but I have not seen any plans like those on the Internet. I can get the 55 gallon drums for free and that's why we where thinking of using one of those. So I'm just lookin for some guidance, thanks.

Was not planning on it to be. But to be honest I don't know the advantages or disadvantages of them.

Counterflows do give a more even heat if properly designed. There are plenty of guys here that can help. I am more of a gasser now than a stoker.
