I was at Home Depot a week or so ago picking up stuff for a table I'm building for my wife. And as always I wander down the smoker/grill aisle. The brinkman trailmaster limited edition was marked down to $199. So I go about my shopping while googling the smoker. Not perfect but people seem to be happy with it after some mods and such. So I go to see if they have any. the only two guys I can find are at the paint booth. 1 is like 8 feet tall, and the other is dressed like dr. Who (the David tenant dr.who if anyone is a fan, did I mention this was on Halloween?). The 10 foot tall guy uses his little Star Trek scanner gun thingy and tells me that they have three. I toss it back and forth decide to go for it. So they go looking, dr. Who's trench coat flowing behind him as he goes up and down the aisle waving his sonic screwdriver. Finally find one (well I found it, but it's Home Depot what do you expect). So it's up high, and these two guys finally find a little Latino woman who is signed off to run the lift. She has to go up a wrestle this rather sizable box onto the lift. I'm about ready to call it quits at this point, but it's way too entertaining.

So they get the box to the ground and it literally looks like it fell off the truck, the little lady doing the heavy lifting says she thinks it is fine (an entire corner of the box is missing exposing a 3" deep dent in the barrel of the smoker). I kind of feel bad when I tell them I'll have to pass, the 11 foot tall guy almost looks like he is going to cry. Dr. Who is distracted, I'm thinking he might have forgotten his Ritalin, and the little lady looks like she is ready to punch me in the throat.

What about the display model I ask (fearing for my life more than I ever have at Home Depot). We can do that, the voice from 13 feet in the air says. Great let me check it out real quick. So I go over it with a fine tooth comb. Missin a couple of nuts and bolts. They didn't use the washers during assembly, so I point this out. They offer $25 off. Done. So I got my trailmaster limited for $175.

Now that it's been disassembled, reassembled RVT'd and doors sealed and seasoned it is ready to go.

And the smokers first victim will be this Boston butt purchased at the local grocery store for $1.59/lbs. I don't know what you guys are paying, but I bought three at that price.

"That's funny, right there. I don't care who you are." Next time you go to HD, please take your video camera. Not a bad price for your butts. They're running about $1.99 here and I see them on the site at $0.99 on sale.

Good luck with your new smoker, and keep on smokin', Joe
