Finally Got A Propane Smoker and more!

  1. I've been looking at Propane smokers for a few months now and I finally got one! Construction work has been slow around here to say the least, so with some time off, my SO opted to draw one up and build it in the company shop. Am I going to way!

I really wasn't too sure where to post it, so I asked Dave and he said to post it here!

I don't really have all the specs and as soon as I can get the drawings (rough) and other info, I will add it if anyone is interested.

I do know he started with Black Iron and then put fire rated 1 1/2" insulation with z bar, then covered that with stainless steel. I have the Northern Tool propane burner that Pops has in his smoker. He also made a side fire box that I can use an electric burner in for cold smoking, or the option of charcoal and/or wood.

We've gotten the temp up to 500* and as low as 145*, which I'm sure I can get it lower than that, I just haven't really messed with it. It really holds the heat very well and I shouldn't have any problems smoking in the Colorado winter! Playing around with it a couple days ago (outside temp was 55* and windy), we were able to get it to sit nicely at 275* and 90 minutes after turning off the propane, the temp was still at 125*.

He did 90% of the build at the shop and just some odds and ends here at home, so I really don't know that much about it.

Propane burner with an adjustable rack

Side fire box (leftover ashes I dumped in there to cool). All I've done with this is place the electric burner in to see how well I could get smoke into the main chamber - worked like a charm!

The removable separator/heat baffle between the lower chamber with the burner and the main smoking chamber.

One of the racks he built for the main chamber

Inside the main chamber. I can have up to 8 racks if I choose.

He put an adjustable baffle in the top as well.

First coat of really ugly paint he brought home...

He built a stand for it out of black angle (I think that's what it's called)

    Thanks for looking!
