Final verdict of Dyna-Glow offset smokers?

  1. Im curious if even the very cheap retail on the Dyna-Glow with modifications are worth the smoke you make in them.. My budget is still low due to the fear of turning up missing due to my wife.. I was wondering with modifications and possibly even building an insulated house around it if it was worth my time?????

    I've only done a couple of cooks on mine. It's still a new smoker to me and I'm slowly learning it. So far both cooks produced decent results. The first cook was chicken (cheap, so you don't cry to much if you mess things up) and second was ribs (they turned out really well). Temp control takes some fiddling with the FB vent. It's definitely not a set-it-and-forget-it type cooker. Both cooks were in 50 degree weather, sunny and very little wind. Haven't done another cook on it because the weather has just been too crazy up here over the last few weeks.

    Things I have noticed:

    1) need something to even the temp out in the CC. much hotter on the FB side.

    2) the bottom rack is way to close to the FB opening to be usable

    3) it flows well and is pretty well sealed.

    I'll keep it as a third smoker because it holds a ton of food compared to my other smokers (Backwood Patio and a WSM 18.5) and  I'll tweak it.

    You can pick one up on Amazon for about $170. I saw them at the BBS for about the same price. If it was me I'd find another 130 and buy a WSM.

    This is what I can produce on what I have now. I like wood and charcoal. I would like to go to a bigger one but cost effective.
