I wasn't sure if I'd like competition either, but I love it. Ideally, I'd love to own a Q restaurant eventually, and awards add to your curb appeal. The biggest reason, though, is the comradery between teams. My first competition, I was running late. I pulled into my spot, and before I could get out of my truck, guys from 3 teams around me had half of my truck unloaded. We got unloaded, and went to say thanks and introduce myself, and I got a handshake and a "welcome to the BBQ family."

So yeah, it's subjective, yeah, it's frustrating, but I don't know of anywhere else that you can find that kind of experience with total strangers. So if I'm spending the entry fee to go drink with my BBQ family, I might as well try to win. Lol

I see your point on the social aspect. I would just love to hear a veteran NC Judge, who 2 times a week eats 24 hour smoked, dowsed in Spicy Vinegar chopped whole hog for the last 30 years, explain why at a competition they eat 4 hour smoked and foiled with honey, brown sugar and maple syrup, pulled pork and give it a grand champion score...JJ

On that point, I couldn't agree more.

Are all BBQ competitions like that? I find it hard to believe.
JJ, one of these days I'll get over my phobia of the East Coast and find your place & check it out.

I am moving to west/central PA. So not that east coast in a couple more days...JJ

The Mrs is from Pittsburgh and still has 2 sisters and a brother there. We visit now and then.
Serious Italian...
You can find me about 3 hours north/east of Pittsburgh. A meet and greet just could be doable...JJ
