i just bought this from Home depot  and I was wondering if it was safe to use ? I want to make the charcoal basket out of it.I dont see the word " galvanized " on the sticker, it was made in China, so Im nervous about the fumes.

Welcome aboard.  Hard to tell if the grate is galvie or not.  Doesn't look it, but that's just my opinion and you know how much that's worth.  Your wife should be proud of your accomplishment.  You saved her megabucks on the construction.  Just tell her that buying the commercial equivalent, the 22.5 WSM (Weber) would be in the neighborhood of $400.

I see you've got a double post with your Expanded metal query and since I'm the moderator for this forum, I'll go ahead and remove the other one for you.    No problem, happens far too often to me.

This is the metal most use

Seems like it is a lot heavier than what you have???

I think it should say if it's galvanized .But w/ it coming from china ,who knows?

You could always burn it really hot to be sure.

The stuff you have is "lath" it's meant to have stucco applied over it so it probably is galvanized. It's also pretty thin so when you burn off the coating it won't hold up very long. I'd take it back and go with the stuff in eman's post. Good luck.

Thanks guys!! Gonna go back to home Depot for the millionth time this week.

looks galvanized to me. I would'nt use it for a charcoal basket. Return it and get some thats not galvenized. they do carry steel only. Get 3/4 # 9 expanded metal

Yeah, that's lath, and it's what every HD and Lowes employee I've talked to thought I was talking about when I asked for expanded metal.  I'm pretty confident it's galvanized too.

And even if you could burn it off safely, that stuff is Flimsyville and I doubt it would hold up long for a charcoal basket.  Just for curiosity, I shot my fire with my laser thermometer during my last smoke, and IIRC I got temp readings in the neighborhood of 700 degrees in the heart of the fire.  I don't think that stuff would stand up to that kind of heat for long, but I've been wrong before.

Go on line to HD site and search "expanded metal" you can get the package which has a 24x12" piece, the sku# 45830. The site should tell you stock available at the store. Bring this infomation and they can use the sku to find the location in the store, good luck.:grilling_smilie:

The expanded metal in my local store is over by the hardware and usually with the thick angle iron  and aluminum stock.  The lath is in the building materials area closer to the lumber and other such stuff.
