New out of the box and plugged in with an extension cord (heavy duty 14 gauge).  Started preseason process at 8:30 at 11:30 Heat read 105.  Turned off the unit and started over.  At 1:30 heat was 119.  Timer was set for 3 hours.  The "heating" light did not come on.  Need suggestions/help.

Sorry if this is not the right place to ask.

Sounds like you have a bad controller. Using an extention cord shouldn't cause that much issue.

Join the legions of people and call their customer service or better yet take it back and get a different smoker. Feel free to read about other issues with these smokers.

Sorry for your problems but they are regular topics on here now, sad to say. If you can, take that POS back to where you bought it for a refund & invest/upgrade to something that will suit your needs. Customer service will send you a new something or other to fix this issue but it's probably just the start. I would also suggest typing 'MES smokers' in the search bar and reading up on the issues the new generation units have and decide if you want to deal with this one. I run a Smokin' It #3 electric and although not the best or most expensive it suits my needs. In hindsight, I'm now wishing I had invested in a pellet smoker (which I now desire) which, to me, is the best of both Worlds. Rec Tec makes a very good unit although I have not tire kicked it up close and personal. Char Griller also has an entry level unit now for about $450. Regardless, HTH & good luck.....Willie
