Today I showed the kids some basics of Dutch Oven cookery. Making a tasty dessert certainly gets the attention of young folks! We made what I will now call Chocolate Surprise cake.

I found this recipe at http://papadutch.home.comcast.net/~papadutch/

The recipe: Mix 1 1/2 cups hot water with a half cup of cocoa powder and a cup of light brown sugar. Pour into the bottom of your dutch oven.
Then add a layer of mini marshmallows.
Mix box of chocolate cake mix per instructions and pour over marshmallows.
Sprinkle 10 ounces of cemi-sweet chocolate chips on top.

I modified an old, trashed gas grill by placing a stout steel plate in the bottom.

Placing about 10 coals under the oven and 18 to 20 on top will make the inside of the dutch oven reach around 350F.

The cake baked for 60 minutes. We served it warm with ice cream and it was GREAT!

Our whole family is involved in Scouting and have participated in Dutch oven cooking while camping. I put my little burn barrel together to allow us to experiment at home with some recipes.

I could never get the hang of Dutch Oven Cooking

We used to hang out with a group that all they used were Dutch Ovens for cooking.  Everything, and I Mean EVERYTHING was cooked in a Dutch Oven.

Looks Great!
