My dumb dog knocked my Maverick ET-7 dual probe transmitter off of the table it was on with her tail and now it quit working. This happened 3 hours into smoking a 5.25 butt. I tried everything I could think of to make it work again, but it's dead. The butt was for a little work party tomorrow and now I'm screwed. Does anyone know a retailer who sells this (Wal-Mart, Target, Sears, etc)? I have an instant read that I can use for the butt (I'll have to keep lifting the lid of my WSM) and an oven themometer for temp at the grate but I have no idea how accurate these are.

I wonder what smoked dog tastes like.... Just kidding of course.

Occasionally you can find digital thermometers at Lowe's. I've seen them (not the ET-73) at Wal-Mart. Bed Bath & Beyond also carries digital thermometers, if you've got one of those in your area.

Good luck!

Don't sweat it SteevieG. Just know your pit temp and you'll be fine. Keep it where you want it, or about 225.

Check your butt when you think it will be about 160*, then foil for a few hrs and just check the bone then. When that bone wants to pull right out it is ready. You'll learn what it feels like, practice. You'll be fine, don't worry.

Good luck!

your spot on al , maybe we should all do a few cooks now and then without all our high tech aids , we may become better cooks that way . they got by for thousands of years without digital thermo,s and and stuff, would probably do us go to learn to Q well without them.

SteevieG,

You could always just plug the probe into the base unit. You'll be able to read the temps. OR, was that the unit that got damaged ?? If so, then you might just have to wing it, go out and buy a cheap thermometer, or just get another digital unit. I know most aren't the remote style, but at least you'll be able to keep track of your temps. I recently bought a new digital, single probe unit. I was having issues with my Maverick thermometer.

Just a few suggestions

Thanks y'all. It is going to be fine. As you all know the butt is very forgiving. I posted in the heat of the moment and I had the tools (not necessarily the knowledge, though) to get through. Thank you all for the input and putting up with my rant.

Steve as you already said butts are really forgiven, and I don't think you'll have problem either. I'm sure you'll figure something out. Now for the real problem. As Flash said "YOU CALLED YOUR DOG DUMB" Now you know to make up to him he gets some of the meat. And probably a nice belly rub.

You REALLY PICKED THE WRONG PLACE TO EVEN JOKE ABOUT IT...

I have seen digital themo's at Walmart, Target, Lowes, Home Depot, etc..
This list goes on. They can be found. What you have will work fine though.
Dumb thermometer attacking your dog like that!
