Smoking Meat Forum,

I really need a grill and I think it will be much more fun to build a grill from scratch, rather than buy one. My brother has a welder and all the tools required to do it. I know where to find 55 gallon oil drums for free, this is Texas after all... So the help I need is tips and tricks to turn this into a reality. I have found a design online that I really like [ http://www.theathomewelder.com/2010/01/04/diy-drum-smoker/ ]. I'm thinking about using ceramic engine paint on the interior as it's more tolerable to higher temperatures. I'm hoping that I can use this for charcoal (or gas) as well as a traditional wood smoker. I'm super excited about this project and this is my first post. Sorry if I posted this on the wrong page.

I would rethink using paint on the interior of your drum. As long as it's been burned out - liners removed, and properly seasoned, you shouldn't need paint. Take a look around the forums! Welcome!

Thanks gravey, I'm starting to do some research. I'm probably going to get the entire thing sand blasted, appreciate the help.

Sandblasting's definitely the way to go if you want to do less work! Have you checked out the UDS Build section? That's where you'll probably find the best tips.
