I have a small gas grill and just bought a weber one touch silver 221/2.
I was hoping to use it to do slow low temp cooking --like for brisket.
Some have said its hard to get temp low enough.

Dilemma--should I take it back and get --say a weber smoky mountain or is there enough difference to warrent --having both.

What is consensis for best low cost smoker --if there is one.
What is opinion on the Weber smoky mountain smoker.

Again appreciate your help.

I have a 22 1/2" weber silver grill & had a hard time keeping the temp down to a low enough temp. It may be good if you have something small to smoke. Credawg used one to smoke a chuck roast not long ago.

just my $.02

The ECB is cheap & a tough customer ............. PeculiarMike has had his for 84 years, and it still works!

If you can afford a WSM, by all means get it...... set it and forget it smoker that can produce competition style results!!
As far as the one touch, best charcoal grill you'll ever have, tell mama you need something to cook steaks on, then push the gasser off the deck

i really have no clue about gas anything-unless i eat a lot of mexican food but if ya can get the heat & smoke low on 1 end,the meat on the other & control the heat & exhaust, ya can do it well.like anything- it just takes practice & persistence......JU CAN DO IT.... this is simple but i hope it helps....

If cost is a major concern I have a weber kettle that I've used for years. I don't have any of those fancy rigs that some of these rich folks have :) and my brisket comes off as good as if it came from a much more expensive setup. Like some of the others have said....practice, practice, practice.

Ok my .5 cents... I know people who have that grill and have and do use it to smoke, yes, it takes some work, but it can be done. As mentioned before, it is a very versitile grill, especially for the price. If you keep it covered it will last.
Now, should you go buy a smoker? Well, this would depend on how much you plan on smoking, if it's once or twice a year, not really worth it, if once a month, yes go get it. If you get one like the CharGriller with SFB or the Brinkman Smokin Pro, you can also use it as a grill! I use mine as a grill and when I do I use wood not lump.
If you have enough room to store two and can afford it, go for it.

Hope this helps.

I have a Weber performer (gift from my newborn daughter for papas day

) and have done some of my best smokes on her. the technique is rather time consuming but the results make it worthwhile. You don't want to use too many coals first off, if you have some coal baskets (little half circle lookin things), fill one of them up and use no more coal than that at any time and your temps should be fine. make sure you have the coal basket pushed all the way to one side of the grill and put your meat as far away from the fire as possible. I'm not sure if it helps but position the vent on the lid over the meat so the smoke will at least pass over the meat. I'm not sure if it makes a difference but I do it mainly on superstition. now go out and give that gasser the boot and get cookin on your weber!
