Took three lengths of 1/4" all thread and temp wired to my grate. Works perfect! Drop in and rotate into the slots.

I like it Case!    Hopefully you won't have to do much adjusting though and just control the heat....

If you're doing a adjustable height basket keep in mind you'll want it up towards the middle of the barrel because the flames will get you when you're searing!   Bending down in the barrel to sear is NO Good...lol

Keith I mainly made the adjustable rack so that I can drop the grate if I don't have enough clearance to the lid. The charcoal basket will also have supports to side into the rack so it can be raised up as high as I want it to go.

I hope you know what i mean with the charcoal basket level... The height that Big Poppa has it set at works really well.  The bottom of the basket is 18" up from the bottom at searing level...which puts my basket a couple of inches below my cooking grate.

Your measurements will be different of course but that'll give you an idea.

Oh ok, i think i know what you're saying.    I was hoping that you were doing something like that so you can move your charcoal basket up

I will be able to move the charcoal basket up. It will sit in the same supports as the rack. I will be able to bring the basket right up to the bottom of the rack. Or I could lower the rack all the way down to the basket. Both the cooking grate and the basket will have support pins.

Sounds awesome, will you be able to move them both with some type of hook?

This particular rack has handles, so I'll use my DO gloves for that. The basket will have a hook able handle and I'll use my fryer basket hook for that.

Right i knew you're using a Weber grate...the basket i was hoping you could use a hook to swing it into the brackets.

Are you gonna attempt to tack weld the bolts onto the grate or stick with wire to hold it?

Yes I'll be using a hook for the basket. Yes I will tack weld the all thread to the grate.  I just wired it up so I'd know where they needed to be.

Decided to take a break from shoveling sand and install the nipples for the air intake vents.

That took a whopping 3 minutes. 1 minute per vent. Now back to shoveling sand...

I like the adjustable rack system.

I have been kicking around the idea of an UDS for chicken comps.... may have to explore it a light more now.....

Not only are the racks going to be adjustable, the charcoal basket is going to be able to move up and down too, or just sit down at the bottom.

which is the most important part and the best part. The cooking grate. .. meh

If I ever need more height the dome lid goes on.

We use drums for feed storage for our livestock. I will have to see what I can get my hands on.

With running the risk of a slight hijack.......... How do you plan to seal the top? Or is it supposed to have air gaps at the top for venting......

No worries about a HiJack this thread is about building drums and what makes them work!

I have the locking band for this drum so I will use that.
