Couple Newbie ?s

Discussion in 'Roll Call' started by titus0327, Dec 22, 2009.

  1. Im interested in using wood pellets to smoke with. Any advice is appreciated. I use a propane smoker. Do they last as long as chips? Provide better smoke? Do I put them right in the pan? Do I wrap them in foil with a few holes?

Also, Im in Buffalo, any experience smoking outdoors with a propane smoker while its snowing?? Does this make a difference? Should I put a tent over it to stop the snow? Im doing this in my driveway, so the ground will be dry and solid.

    Thanks for the help.

I have a pellet smoker and I really like it. I spent a lot of time on the net before I bought mine. I got a lot help from this site. I just bought 100 lb of pellets from: LOL, I don't if I can post the site on here. Buy some good pellets, put them in foil, poke sum holes, put them by the fire, & you will get some smoke flavor.

Guys, can I name a brand name of pellets here? Nubee needs to know.

Welcome to the SMF. Not sure about your question. But you can always smoke in the snow. Just got to be motivated enough to do it.

Welcome to the SMF forum. Lots of folks here with some good advice. As far as the pellets go, I would put them in foil and to the side of the flame, or if you have a small pan or cup that can take the heat put them in it next to the flame. If you have no other option thatn to put them directly on the flame I would saok them in water to keep them from burning up to fast.

I'm sure some of the other guys will chime in with other options. As far as smoking in the snow, check out what the "Dude" has done in the last few days. I guess if you don't mind walking out into the outdoors every now and then, no problem with smoking in the snow. With your unit being propane it should be easy to set the temp and "walk away" and not have to tend it on a minute by minute bases.

Stop by roll call and interduce yourself and equipment and you'll get better replys.

  9. Not too far from you in N.E. Ohio and I use my propane smoker all winter (in fact my favorite time to smoke food) - just make sure to keep the smoker out of any wind and you will be fine.

As far as pellets they are ok but wood chunks work better for me.

    Howdy & Welcome aboard!!

Snow shouldn't effect your smokin', wind is more of a problem. If your smoker is protected from wind it will eventually reach temp and stabilize.

Welcome to the SMF. Chunks are not as high maintenance as chips, and they do last longer. You just need a litlle smoke, not big rollling white clouds. You'll get more feedback from other members on the subject. It's all good my friend.
