A few questions if i do build one.

1) Where would be good places to hunt for a barrel?

2) Has anyone considered putting a door outside of the charcoal basket just in case the charcoal needs to be attended to i.e add more charcoal or wood chunks?

3)  I notice many people either put air inlets that go up the side towards the top and others just put a ball valve at the bottom, What's the pro's / cons of each?

4) How many 3/4 air intakes are at the bottom and are there ball valves on all of them?

A few questions if i do build one.

1) Where would be good places to hunt for a barrel?   Try a fuel oil distributor... Just have to burn it out.... You can also order them new online....http://for-sale.yakaz.com/burn-barrels-for-sale-in-indiana

2) Has anyone considered putting a door outside of the charcoal basket just in case the charcoal needs to be attended to i.e add more charcoal or wood chunks?  If you do, I suggest getting an extra barrel and cut the door larger than the opening so sealing it will be easier.....

3)  I notice many people either put air inlets that go up the side towards the top and others just put a ball valve at the bottom, What's the pro's / cons of each?  Extensions reduce bending over... Con, friction loss in the long pipe... a larger pipe will overcome that friction....

4) How many 3/4 air intakes are at the bottom and are there ball valves on all of them?  Usually 3 each air intakes....  Usually only 1 with a valve..... If one fully open port doesn't do the trick, a fully open port and one partially open port will work ...  etc.

Thanks Dave, i've been hearing about UDS builds so often I might just have to do one myself.  It's kind of like driving on 80-90 up through the Dakota's and seeing a sign for " Wall Drug" for hundreds of miles....You HAVE to stop there!
