Okay so my Dad and I have gone back and forth for a while on a temporary fix for cold smoke generation and we've come up with a few ideas that I'd like to run past you guys (they call for some builds which is why I thought this was the best forum for it).

First idea is to take my Master Forge Vertical Electric smoker, turn it as low as possible while getting the chips to smolder and just freezing a giant block of ice in the water pan. If thats still too hot we could also put a frozen jug of ice on the bottom rack to increase the amount of cooling. (he also mentioned using Dry Ice, but that seemed like a bad option due to CO2 putting out any smoldering I have going).

Second option was to take the bottom section of my smoker (its basically a tray with lava rock and the electric element), putting some sort of lid on it and using vent tubing to transfer smoke to a food grade bucket.  The vent tubing would be in place to cool off the smoke either by air or by putting ice around it.  This idea seems solid and could be done on the cheap (find a cheap kettle grill lid, get a free food grade bucket from a grocery store or something and vent tubing is cheapo) however, the plastic concerns me.

I don't have numbers yet on how cold I can get my smoker but I figured it couldn't hurt to spend 5 minutes and run the ideas past you guys/gals and see how dumb I am.

Any ideas/tips/scolding is appreciated!

If you want pics of my smoker just ask and I'll post em, I can't find my camera ATM but if you're really curious here's a link to it on Lowe's Site

THANKS!

A soup can with the label removed, top still slightly attached, filled with chips, and a soldering iron stuck into the bottom makes one heck of a $6 cold smoker.

Yeah after I posted I saw some stuff about it, sometimes what words you use to search make all the difference.

Thanks, I'll definitely do that for a while until I get hardcore into the smoking!

Harbor Freight is the cheapest place to get a soldering iron.

Don't overthink it

Todd

The soldering iron works well but the Amazn Smoker will make your life a lot easier

Like I said I just need something temporary while I'm getting into smoking.  As far as getting a Soldering Iron, there are no Harbor Freights in my area I don't think so I'll be stuck with either a Home Depot (ew) or there's Microcenter near me

Get the cheapest soldering iron you can find

We have a couple Harbor Freight Stores in town, but we also have these "Discount Tool Stores" around too.  Mostly China junk, but cheap and good enough to use once or twice.

Do you have a Northern Tool around?

Try Walmart for a cheap soldering iron

You're only talking about $6 or so

Todd is being the usual gentleman he is. He sells the A-MAZE-N smoke generators & they are the best thing you could have for a well built economical easy to use smoke generator. There is no equal IMHO.
