I want to build my own cold smoke maze for pellets I was going to make one similar to the 5x8 a-maze-n product and had a couple questions. What is the point of the hole on the two opposite corners of the tray? Also what are they using for legs I can't find a clear picture of it and im not sure you actually need them. I understand the point of raising it for air flow but if it's sitting on a grate it should get plenty any way. Looks like they are a X pattern, my guess is more for stiffness. And anyone know the guage of metal I would guess it's not heavier than 16ga being it's not going to take that much heat.
Thanks for your input.

Hello James, I am not understanding to your pellet maze you are referring. I do though understand The whole cold smoke theory and concept behind how easy it can be accomplished for cheap!  I like to use an old metal coffee can with holes in the bottom and and round the side also. Then I use a few Kingsford Briquets and or hard wood char chucks as my main source for constant low temp heat with my added wood chips of choice for my desired smoke flavor. Here is a few pics of how I cold smoke, nothing hard or complicated about it.

The nice thing about my Poor Boy coffee can smoke generator is this.  I can take

pliers and grab the top lip of the hot can, removing it from my smoker, shack the ash out of it from all the whole on the bottom, add a few more new chips on to of the red hot coals and keep cold smoking until done!  Not much to it, if your understand all the other little things that go into curing and smoking meat the safe and correct way.

Keep us all posted with your progress, Good Luck!

James the holes are for lighting the pellets,if you are putting it on a grating it should be fine.I use mine in a mailbox with legs.

Cool, thanks guys. I haven't been able to build it yet been working to much OT and don't feel like staying after. Maybe I will try to do it tomorrow. I did find a nice piece of 304 stainless perforated left over from a job that will work great.

Well I started my project today at work. Worked on it for about an hour total. I sheared all my pieces as well as a couple blanks for my buddy I work with. He hasn't broke down to buy a smoker or build one and just uses chips in his gasser so hes going to make one too. But I got all my pieces laid out and notched. Deburred my cuts from the grinder, cleaned it up for welding and rounded the raw sharp edges.

I only have a picture of it in the flat with the lay out I will take more tomorrow morning when I finish it.

Kind of hard to see the lay out. You will see it come together. Should be a fun TIG welding project.

Whoops...Sorry didn't realize that the product inspiring me to build this is a moderator on this site. Im just kind of a do it yourself kind of guy, specially when the material is free and I have access to the proper equipment. Hopefully there is no hard feeling about it.

Tig welded my pieces in it was a pain getting in that tight. Welded the corners out and made some legs

Here is a leg shot. I sheared
1 1/2"x1 1/2" pieces laid out center both ways and used a grinder with a cut off wheel and cut straight in on one side to center. Slid them inside each other tig welded them together. Now any way you turn them on grates they will still sit fine.

Picked up a 20 pound bag of lumber jack pellets competition blend for 8.99 at rural king and did a test run. Last time i checked it it was about 11 hours in and i had a couple inches worth left of pellets.
