Clueless and adventurous, diving head first into the smoke.

  1. My name is Matt and I live in Wilmington, Delaware. My smoking experience is non-existant, but I am committed to becoming proficient! I have purchased a Master Forge vertical charcoal smoker and have made some attempts at modifying (based on others recommendations) to increase performance. I have issues with heat, but based on some insightful responses believe that it may be more a faulty factory gauge or misplaced therm causing for misleading numbers. I suppose a new purchase might be necessary sometime soon. I have been doing small practice runs in an attempt to get down the right amount of coal and wood for a slow sustained burn, however, too much or too little seems to be my usual amount chosen. Here's hoping I get this down and soon!

Welcome to the forum and your new obsession. It's a learning curve with each unit acting differently until you learn the quirts of it. I smoked up a lot of cheap chicken quarters before spending bucks on a nice chunk of meat.

If you didn't read the Terms of Service notes.....please do.  There are a few things that everyone should know about those pesky little rules before plunging into the forums. Rule #11......"Off Site Links are not allowed here at SMF" is something new. There are other simple guidelines for all of us to remember as we interact here.

If you need any help roaming around here in SMF....just give me a shout.  Happy to help any time!
