We'll it would be easy now just to set something in between the expanded metal dividers you already have, wounded if crushed beer cans stuffed in there would work?

Anybody know if aluminum would put off anything bad at these temps?

Giving it another go. Only left one divider in to help contain the coals and filled the rest with briquettes and lump. Seems to be doing better but it's too soon to tell how long it will burn. On another note, I definitely need a new temp gauge. Smoker was reading 325 but the oven temp gauge inside, just under the smoker gauge, reads between 225-250. Don't know which one to trust!

Wouldn't trust either.  Buy yourself a good digital and calibrate it with boiling water (212 degrees).

I had the wife pick me up another oven thermometer today just to experiment. It's spot on with the smoker gauge, so at least I got that going for me. Still don't know if that's the actual temp. I'll get one of the digital set ups next time I cook.

Maybe it's the amount of coal I started off with, but I almost can't get this fire under control! Even with the damper closed all the way it's still trying to hit 300. I guess I'll learn how to use this basket through denial and error.

Yup.. If intake vent is closed.. that only means one thing... "Air Leaks" ... my chargriller does the same thing... until you can get leaks under control... your just gonna have to sin and close the exhaust down.... that's the only way I can keep mine down....

Sorry for the confusion but this isn't my basket.  I was just showing it as an example.  But anyways I think you can buy those plates online.

I know I'm late to the ball here, by a few years, but I just saw this in my smoker journey.
You could have got some u shaped tube stock and cut it so you could slide it around the expanded steel you already had set up for the snake. That would allow you to use is as abnormal basket, then slide the u-stock in for a minion box. Just my thoughts.

If you can fabricate something like that, you might consider making a portable grill, about the size of a breadbox, that you could put in an existing park grill or fireplace.
