Hey guys, has any one thought of using a turkey fryer type strainer as a charcoal basket? I am in the planning stage now and that seems to be the hardest and most expensive part of the build. Also any other ideas for air intake besides ball valves .

Wudy no the fryer basket won't hold up. Baskets aren't hard to make out of grill grates and expanded steel or just expanded steel.

Another option is to buy a basket. Farmer bought a basket from Big Poppa Smokers so you can ask his opinion but it's unique because it has 2 different levels to smoke or bring it up to grill and sear. They also have the whole kit which includes slider vent controls.. Works awesome.

If you build your own I'm a fan of more air inlets than less. A good formula for vents is four total. (2) 1" vents that you can cap off and(2) 3/4 holes with ball valves. When you want to get it screaming hot open them all and when you want low and slow you can go to 1 or 2 ball valves.

I love the big poppa basket, It  will come with the hardware so the basket can be used for smoking and searing.

Nice basket for the money.
