All cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS
To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222.
It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number.

I have been getting these emails for around 2 or 3 years now saying that all the cell phone numbers will be going public in less than a month and that if you don't want telemarketer calls you need to sign up. Its just not true.

With that being said I listed mine since we get news in Texas slowly !
I did not read that part but I listed my phone . Isn't anything private any longer from sales folks online or youe personbal cell phone ?

I posted this for the folks who have not listed thier phones and might want to .

Thanks

Then you didn't sign up ? So we don't need to sign up ? I am a custom car painter and bodyshop guy not a phone guru . Thanks for any and all info . It needs to be set straight . Remember some of you are way more tech savvy than some of us others .

Thanks for all info

Do some research on Snopes and you'll find out they are not the giant mega fact-checking team everyone thinks they are. Its a husband and wife that simply compile public information and make a dscision based on reason...the same research we can all do ourselves.

I learn more here on SMF than I ever did at the domino hall with grand dad . I mean damn .

Telemarketing companies, just like mail marketing companies, buy telephone number lists. Those lists are created a number of ways, they do not need a cell phone company release of numbers to get a list of numbers. If your name and number happens to be provided somehow on that list, the list by law has to be cross checked against the Federal Do Not Call List, thus it does give a bit of protection. However many telemarketing companies ignore cross checking.

I know that my home phone land line was getting a 50 calls a month from telemarketers. 60 days after registering with the Fed Do Not Call Listing, I may have got 15 a year.

I appreciate the prompt to register my cell phone, and went ahead and did that, even if there is no forthcoming event that would make it critical.

I didn't sign up and I have not received any calls from telemarketers. Here is what it states on the main page of that email link you sent.

"You may have received an email telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database; however, that is not the case. Federal Communications Commission regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. "

There are a couple of ways or systems systems that telemarketers use get a hold of you but for the most part what happens is their auto dial system will call out to a phone number and some systems actually dial several numbers at once and when one of those phone numbers picks up it terminates the other dialed numbers and connects their operator to the person who picked up the phone. This way they don't have to call hundereds of phone numbers one at a time to try and reach someone. You will notice (especially around election time) that your phone will ring and you will go pick it up and no one is there. Well this is because one of the other people picked up the phone before you did and your call was terminated. With that being said as someone mentioned before it is illegal for telemarketers to dial cell phone numbers with a auto dial system. That doesn't mean that they will all follow this but if they do call you they are in violation of the law. My rule of thumb is if I don't know the number or if it shows up as unavailable or blocked on the caller ID I don't answer it. Hope this makes sense.

Pure urban legend. But I think most of us have at some time gotten recorded calls from solicitors on our cell phones. It's happening a little more often which sucks. I don't answer my house or cell phone unless I know who's calling. That's what caller ID and voice mail are for.

Any time you receive something in an email that arises an emotional response, head over to snopes to confirm

It does , I NEVER answer my phone if I don't know the number exception being in my own area code as sometimes customers get my number from others in management . It sucks when you have this much pressure on your shoulders 24/7.

Thanks

Ive been on donotcall.gov since they started. I rec'd a call from a co. in Las Vegas one day and told them to take me off the list. Two weeks later I rec'd another call from the same co. I proceded to take my portable radio with me "full volume" into there office and sat in a chair. They freaked out as they had classes going on. I explained to them that they wasted 5 minutes of my phone time with there prerecorded message and I'm returning the favor. They threatened to call the cops. I wrote my phone number on there wall with a sharpie and walked out. Guess what, no more phone calls.

That has been going around for a couple of years and is totally false...
