PLease.. If you do try to go with the soldering iron... DO NOT use one that has been previously used for actually soldering.... you must buy a new one with no soldering residual on the tip.... hopefully you won't have to resort to this method ...

Very good advice! I do actually have a clean soldering iron, but really want to get the AMNPS working right. Too many rave review for me to think it's not going to work. Just no time till later!

So, I finally managed to get a little time to get back to this. I used some kraft paper to extend the stack to three feet from the top of the box, and put the whole thing up on a table, to get it out of the damp. I used a firebrick to protect the table from the AMNPS, microwaved the pellets for 2 minutes, and made sure I gave it the full ten minutes of flame before I blew it out and slid it into the box. So far, I'm getting quite a bit more smoke than last time, I'm up to three hours so far.

The old stack was only up to the second row of blue tape, the extension is about two and a half times as tall. Really seems to be increasing the draft!

Enough thin blue smoke to get it on camera!

I'll report on final results as soon as its done.

Instead of just letting it burn for 10 minutes, blow down & in toward the bottom of the unburned pellets a few times to really drive the big hot red cherry deep into the bottom. Once it's lit properly, it's even hard to intentionally put it out, and will never go out on it's own.

Thanks, Bear. Aren't you the guy who uses a heat gun to start yours? I have one at work, I will bring it home next time.

Cool, I'll go re-read that thread now. Should have done that before I started today, I get in a hurry too often.

OK, thread re-read. I actually did exactly what you described, it must've stuck better than I thought! Even without the heat gun, I had a big, bright cherry on the end before I blew out the flame and slid the AMNPS in the box. I'm sure it is a big chunk of why it's still going strong, thanks Bear!

Extending your stack, makes a HUGE difference.
SO very true! For me, it made the difference between a frustrating failure, and success. I finally had to go to sleep last night, so I'm not sure how long the AMNPS lasted, but it burned all the way to the end. And , more importantly, the bacon looks great! It's all resting in the fridge right now, I'll slice off a for a fry test soon, then freeze for 4 hours to slice, as recommended by many here. Thanks to all who helped!

You do know it's better to wait a couple days with it in the fridge before freezing for 4 hours & slicing??

Just checking.

Yeah, I've read pretty much every post I can find about bacon. Unfortunately, I won't have ANY time for the next two weeks, between work, school, and National Guard duty, I'll barely be home enough to sleep, let alone slice bacon. I went ahead and sliced a little off for a fry test, it's WAAAAYYYY better than anything store-bought already.
