I was wondering. If i were to get two butts, very similar in weight and texture, but only had one thermometer, would it be a safe bet that i could cook both according to the temp of the butt that had the thermometer in it? Or, do you all think that every butt is THAT different? I may buy a little meat thermometer for one and my maverick in the other and see how closely they cook. Anyone tried anything like this???? ... oh the things i think about when I cant sleep

two butts can seem to have an average a hour difference. They could be the same or 2hrs apart. still+/-

none the less you have to trust the thermo's. if you have to, pull the thermo out and stick it the other to check temp.

I sugest a dual probe or a second thermo.

I only have two thermometers and have smoked 4 butts at a time on a couple of occasions. I leave them in 2 of the butts, but about every other time I open the smoker to spritz the butts, I check the other butts too. They're usually fairly close if they're about the same size, but I guess I'm not ready to just trust that to happen without actually checking.

Funny, I just got back from Jacksonville.

Do what ya gotta do. I have tried two butts and I have a couple of regular stick'em thermos and only one digital. I couldn't help myself, I just had to keep changing them around to see if there was a difference in readings. I didn't do a side by side, but rather a top grate and a lower grate. Danged if I remember what the outcome was other than two butts worth of Que.

I am thinking that the top grate ran slightly hotter as would be expected, but I don't think that the meat noticed much difference.

Now for the correct answer....It sounds like we both need a couple of more thermmeters!

yes Jacksonville I used to live off 103rd, Roosevelt and 295, tiquanna ave,by Roosevelt mall, right off blanding and orange park. The best place I ever
lived!

yea i moved allot there lol

Those roasts may hit a plateau at different times and for a different length of time. It is safer to have them both monitored.

When you are out Christmas shopping, accidentally drop another digital into your shopping cart...

I have three digitals and that still isn't enough...

If you only have one thermom, put it in the smaller butt. But like Homebrew stated, each time you check up on them and spritz, pull the probe and check the other butt. The only problem is if they hit the plateau at different times. Like Hawg said, "accidentally" find another thermometer in the chart at checkout......

I love my little pocket instant read thermometer, it takes the worry out of whether it's time to pull it or not.

Yeah.. looks like you sure did. I love Jacksonville as well, all we need now is a few more people to buy Jags tickets so people can watch the games on T.V.

Anyways, thanks all for the info, I figured I would get answers similar to "get new thermometers" and thats o.k. I was just curious. Now a question. What non-digital thermometer brand do you all suggest. I dont think i will be buying another digitial one soon unless i find a deal. I'll look around first, but if it comes down to it, what do you all athink is a good non-digital?

It's a Taylor brand....here's a picture of it in a pork butt.. It's not an expensive one, but I sure have used it for years.

Having 2 thermometers on hand is always a good idea in case one craps out, but the thread has me wondering if the plan is to buy 30 thermometers if you have to do 30 butts?

Put your visor down and use the force, Luke........

Ya Know? It just woludn't be fair to all of the other thermometers to just be sitting there and not used while one of their little freinds was out having fun.

I can also see the arguement with my wife, "But honey, I have to smoke six butts, I have six thermometers, that is just the way it is."

I guess I have some explaining to do to my thermometers........should have a couple of disgruntled ones on my hands. LOL

Agreed. I have three digitals and used them twice - one is obviously unopened in the box yet. I have at least 6 dial thermometer which I've used countless times, but the itny pocket guy - well it's always handy!
