Hi everybody...I am looking to build a uds and wondereded. Is it feasible to cut the bottom out of a uds so then I could just lift the whole smoker off of the fire basket while cooking so I could add wood whenever I want. I would have the fire basket sitting on an iron sheet which would rest on firebrick.

By doing that you are going to create a possibility for an air gap which isn't ideal for controlling temps. Unless you can seal the bottom of the drum to your iron sheet. Not really sure how you could get that to seal well, unless you set the drum on dirt and piled dirt around the base to seal it up.

Ok, thanks for your input. That sure would be a possibility. I was hoping maybe someone had tried it so I could learn from their success or failure. I prob will stick with the standard approach when I build mine.

SH, morning.......  Using the minion method and a properly built charcoal basket, folks have been able to maintain temp and smoke for 20 hours on one filling....   UDS's are a cool smoker and produce some great food.....

Thanks, I am happy to find you guys. I love to learn about bbq. I currently cook on a traeger junior and recently upgraded to the ortech digital control. It outputs much more smoke than the traeger digital control and am much more happy with it. Just made salmon jerky yesterday and it is my best work yet. I am considering a uds so I can cook with wood sometimes instead of pellets.

Welcome aboard Smoke hog!  Glad you've joined our group.  You'll find there are lots of friendly and knowledgeable folks here who genuinely enjoy helping one another.  Looking forward to your input, and just ask when you need anything...someone here will surely have the answer.  I've never built or used a UDS, so I'm not much help with your question, but it looks like the guys have you covered.
