Hello to all,

My question is are you having a nice winter? Well good..lol

really, I am looking at putting an arch on top of my brick smoker and wondering...

A- Is it structurally sound to have both ends bear on the veneer brick?

B- Is it best to have both ends on the interior cinder block?

C- Which is best for bearing the weight of an arch?

The bearing wall and the veneer are 1/2" apart, you also want the arch to continue down the side of the veneer wall smoothly.

Thanks to all, have a good evening.

Winter is good!

Good evening Jim,

So far so good on the winter.  Just waiting for spring......   I'm getting to old for cold.  :-)

If you can get support on both walls it would be better.    The thing to remember is.  Once masonry cures it it self supporting.

Question.   Is there any way you could lay a couple tier of brick at the low side of the arch to help support it?   I know what your talking about, but I'm just trying to make it work for you.

Good point. I will see, trying to purchase some block before spring so I am ready.

Thanks Wes.

Depends on the shape of the arch and the (width) distance of the supporting walls.

Need more details.

Well I am in hopes of 40" wide x 18" tall. Then the top would be 40" front to back.
Thank you for your info in advance

Still difficult to tell, not enough information.

With an arch, the flatter the curve of the arch, the stronger the force to push the two supporting walls out, that's why the cathedrals arches need flying buttresses to push the supports in.
