Hey gang: I'm new to the smoking world, having only about a week ago decided to get into smoking.  I decided to build my own smoker, as I've got plenty of scrap metal and the welding/fabricating know-how/equipment to do it all, once I have the design.  That's where I'm asking you guys for help: I've done some research on smokers and have a preliminary design, but after thinking it over some, I'm not sure I want to jump in on something I have no experience with.  In your opinions, what is the best type of smoker: horizontal, vertical, reverse flow, or something else I haven't considered?  Please feel free to get as complex as you can with the design, as long as it will improve the performance of the thing..  I plan to use charcoal to fire the thing, as I've heard that this results in the best flavor.  Thanks for your input!

I can't speak for horizontal, but vertical.....UDS all the way.  Simplicity, efficiency all at a low cost.  There are quite a few out there where you welders and fabricators have put some very nice special touches to.  Plenty of info on this site about them.
