I'm thinking about getting my pops a smoker and someone on craigslist has a brand new SNG for $25. Any thoughts/comments/places to look for info any of you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi Mr. Wizard. I also was considering the Brinkmann Smoke n Grill but decided on something else instead. From what I've read from perusing this site, people have had problems with maintaining the proper temperature on the thing. Some said it ran hot and some said they had trouble getting it up high enough for extended periods of time.

That said, people have produced some mighty fine food using that unit and it is quite popular. It is also known as El Cheapo Brinkmann. Do a search for ECB under charcoal smokers. There are many modifications people have described that would optimize its performance. For 25 clams, your pops would have hours and hours of fun. Hope this helps and good luck!

Oh yeah, not sure if yours would be the same but the one they sell at my local Wally World has a thermometer that reads "Warm, Med, Hot". Easily replaced but still....what the heck is temperature at Medium? This was a big reason I decided not to go with that unit cuz replacing the thermo and other mods would have just brought the price up for me.

Thanks. Yeah, my main concern is how much would he have to do to make it a smoker he could enjoy and not get too frustrated with from the get go. I'll look around and see what I can find about them on line. I'm technically 'at work' so I thought I'd do a quick post and see what people had to say about them. Thanks again!

Hi there, got 2 ECB's,real good for smoking fish and any thing that doesn't need moe than 2-3hrs.had alot of trouble keeping the temp right for long smokes .All said good smoker for the price. And you can smoke for longer, just keep a real close eye on it,hope this helps

I've smoked turkeys back in the day in the ECB I had - stock from the box too, so its not a bad unit. Is it pro? I'd say not without some mods, but if he is a tinkerer, he can use it a few times and then make some mods to get it dialed in.

Thanks a ton for the info and replies. I'm going to give pops a call tongith and see if it's something he'd like. Thanks again for all of the help!
