For the first time I'm planning on brining my turkey this year and I know you should use a food safe container.  Now, here's the situation I'm in......I'm living in Italy and w/ the language barrier, it has become rather difficult to find one of these containers.  As a back up, I've heard of people using the drawers from their fridge to brine their turkeys, but that didn't go over to well w/ the Mrs.  So, I was able to come across a clear, 30 qt rubbermaid container and thought if people are using their fridge drawers, would this be acceptable?  I'd love to hear inputs.  Btw, if this isn't where this post belongs, my apologies....I thought I'd put it here since it deals w/ poultry.

That is what i use to brine in. just give it a good scrubbing and make sure all the soap is out before hand.

Now I would agree with Bob here on this one. I use an old drywalls mud bucket that is cleaned really well. Others here say that you have to ise a "food safe bucket". I say a very clean bucket/tub what ever.

Won't help you today, but I cannot recommend these enough:

Ziploc, Hefty... whoever. They are food safe, take up ALMOST no room and conform to the shape of what you are brining, so you don't have to worry about weighing down the meat.

Good luck!

I am using a cooler to brine my 9 birds today so I would say your bucket will work just fine. I also have a 5 gallon bucked I picked up a few years back that I use if I am only doing one bird. Its not a "Food grade bucket" but it was bran new and thats the only thing I use it for.

Next time you are at the grocery store, stop at the bakery department and ask if you can have a pail that cake frosting comes in. Food safe and free

I just looked on my European food grade plastic containers and there are two symbols, one is three curved arrows in the form of a pyramid with a 5 inside and the other one next to it is a wine goblet and a fork.  I had to buy mine at a restaurant supply and they have any size you might want, but they are square or rectangular and not round.

Like eman said I think the Rubbermaid would work just fine.

I hope that helps,

Gene

eman just gave a good reply, it's what I often use for brining. I also use some of Gloria's tall tupperware containers, she uses them to hold/tranport menudo . It's all good my friend.
