I just picked up my uncles old homebuild yesterday and im going to bring it back to life. Its in decent shape except the bottom is a bit rusted out in spots. I was thinking of making it a multi-use smoker, as it sits its a vertical with the firebox on the bottom. My plan is to fix the bottom obviously then remove the burner and gas lines and knob from a grill i have been hoarding. This is all just a guess but i think itll work well and help hold temps on long smokes. Itll get the grill up over 400 so with the smoker i think temps around 250 and under will be just about perfect. Anybody tried this before and know if it will work? Thanks.

Its still in the back of the truck, bottom up right now. Ill post some pics once i get the heavy son of a gun out. Its made from pretty thick steel, probably weighs 150 to 170 lbs. Maybe be in an hour or 2.

Was it originally a propane smoker?  Do you have access to a welder to patch up any holes?   Looks like a fun project.  Maybe you should call it  "ole crusty"?

Originally a wood burner. I have access to a welder but i dont think ill need one to get it smoking again. The bottom of the firebox is solid structurally. I think a sheet of steel in the bottom and a new deflector and clean the cobwebs out and she'll be good to go.
