Hi there I'm Geoff I've got a hankering for some smoked meat and I've got a hankering to make it. Myself with a home made reverse flow smoker,

I've got me a 47kg propane tank which I'm thinking of using for the fire box and a 200litre expansion vessel I'm thinking of using for the cooking chamber.

The bit I'm unsure of is whether to mount it in a tshape with the propane tank vertical or mount the fire box horizontally under the cook chamber and connect with flue.

The questions I have is is the propane tank big enough in relation to the cook chamber.

Can I use vitreous enamelled flue pipe to connect between the chambers.

What size flue should I use.

Geoff

There are several online calculators for computing the relationship between pit size, firebox size and smokestack size.  Here is one: http://www.feldoncentral.com/bbqcalculator.html

General wisdom is you want relatively heavy metal (1/4 or better) for everything for heat retention, and either thicker for the firebox, or a double-wall/insulated construction so you can maintain a smaller, hotter fire.  I'm no expert, and probably loads of different approaches can be made to work.

Thanks for the helpful advice I'll try the calculator tomorrow.
Does it matter if the fire box is bigger than suggested
