But it was bigger, I mean it was a sure enough tree???
This one.

Randy,
Sorry Randy, I should have explained it better. That was a picture The place I bought it from used for advertizing. I was making a joke that it grew that big in 8 months. I was kinda egging on Brian.

BTW In case ya sort of missing Brian around, he got a really large promotion. His position now will no doubt take all the strength he has left. Hehehehe. I bet he's getting up earlier, working later, and he doesn't get the easy jobs anymore. But he's the man! Now when he does get to still entertain, his job is to get the big bills. Its what happened, you finally get your job in line and perculating like you want it, then they want you to find and train another nub to take your place while trying to straigthen out your new position's problems. They say only the good die young!

Glad to hear that about Brian, Make the big bucks while you can. Just hope he doesn't work himself to death.

Sorry Richie I don't know how I missed your post, I apologize I wasn't ignoring you.

I went out today and cut my bay back and feed it. Got some questions too. So lets start.

Heres the bay after the hair cut.

IMG_8681.JPG

Tall too!

IMG_8680.JPG

Here's the leaves drying. Heck they way more than paid for the plant!

IMG_8679.JPG

Here's the question.I trimed a bunch of suckers off the plant and as I always I stuck 'em in a quart jar in the window. Some things sprout, some things don't. But its not like I'll miss a quart jar in the window...>LOL

IMG_8683.JPG

Well if they sprout they'll sprout and then I pot 'em and give 'em away. Probably have a few left over to plant.

Thats it for today....... You need to try fresh bay leaves vice dried ones. Its the difference between store bought and homemade bacon!

In your part of the country, you have to plant your own Sassafras ? One of the few wild plants I can identify and I find it wild everywhere. (although what I find are only 8-12 feet at best)I kinda thought it would be just as plentiful there as well, after all that's the seat of cooking with file.
I had no idea Sassafras could get so big.

<Chuckles> yeah you can go and dig it up when you find a patch. But this is Bay. I have Sassafras in another planter just started couple a months ago. Sassafras can grow well over 60/75 ft high. The Sassafras are in a 24" terra-cotta with some garlic. I thought they werre dead, they sat on the porch for over a month before I remembered to plant 'em. But they seem happy enough right now, finally.

Kevin I know you have been busy.I took my plant in back in Oct it is growing new leaves, and I have been using some.Going to have to pick your head on getting a plant to grow from a stem.

Mine came out of the garage window last week. It’s now planted in our flowerbed in the front of the house. Hope it will survive our winters here in a Texas. Fresh bay is the best.
Kev, Keep us updated if those cuttings sprout. B

I am sorry Richie, just saw this. When you sent it, it was sorta tuff around here. But....

Well, I am still working on rooting. If its going to root it should start them soon. I am rooting to give away, my plant has gone complete crazy growing! I'll get a picture tomorrow and stick it up. I did some pruning earlier this year and even the base of the plant is starting new shoots.

I really like the fresh bay also. Makes a gumbo with homemade andouille just really tastee! Did I tell ya I got two near dead sassafras? I guess I have something to learn cause everyone thinks I am stupid for wanting 'em. If the fresh bay made such a difference, I gotta think maybe having my own file might be good also.

When I was a kid, old man down the road was where all the file came from. Everyone laughed about his hidden tree he plundered. But everyone still went to him for their file. Bring his a sixpack, bring him a case, bring him money, bring him nothing, he always had your file. He ground it and it was in those 35MM film containers. He's dead now and only the old timers around here remember him, they remember going an stilling under his trees in his yard (Not Sassafras), drinking a beer or just talking. Thats where we all got our file. The way my sassafras is coming back out I can see it as more of a weed. LOL And I have it in a Pot not in the ground just in case.

Thats a beautiful plant! Yours looks more like a bush, a hedge, there are several species. Like I said above, I'll try and get out and take a picture tomorrow. Mine is over 6 ft and started as a 1 ft bare root. I actually once had the fear of God put into me if I ever when into another nursery....LOL I spent nearly a whole two pay check..... LOL

Oh is that a Maiden Hair fern on the table also?

Morning Kev. Happy to see this post. Isn’t file from thr root. Dried and ground? As in it’s not like plucking a few leaves. You have to get to the root?
Keeps us posted on the bay rooting. The kids.... well you know. They always want something b

Why yes it is (good eye). My wife has lots of plants it is just starting to stay warm enough here to move them outside so they are all over the house.

I forgot the actual name of this Bay plant, I will get it tonight but you are correct it is pretty bushy and says it is a slow grower.
